Rams predicted to take Ohio State's Caleb Downs after Falcons mistake

For whatever reason, the Atlanta Falcons decided to trade their first-round pick to the Los Angeles Rams, and that pick is currently the No. 8 selection in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Not only have the Rams ranked as the best team in the NFL during the year, but they’re also going to have a top-10 pick in a very strong draft class.

When predicting which route the Rams might go, rather than trading the pick for additional assets, Mike Renner of CBS Sports recently predicted that they would select Caleb Downs out of Ohio State.

“The Rams are a nickel-base team through and through. They want as many defensive backs on the field as possible on every play, and Downs is the kind of defender who can keep them strong against the run, even out of those looks,” he wrote.

Downs has been viewed as the top safety throughout this draft process, and that reputation has only been confirmed during his time at Ohio State.

Playing for one of the best defensive teams in the country, he has a real opportunity to come into the NFL and make an immediate impact, even for a team as talented as Los Angeles.

It might not be the worst idea for the Rams to consider moving on from this pick if they don’t love anyone, but if someone like Downs were to fall to them, it would feel too good to pass up.
