Opinion: Adam Aznou’s Everton Under-21 display made one thing clear to David Moyes

Adam Aznou arrived with great fanfare in the summer transfer window, but he’s not even played a single minute for Everton so far.

After a successful loan spell in La Liga with Real Valladolid last season, Everton forked out around £8m to sign Adam Aznou from Bayern Munich.

David Moyes did suggest it may take time for Aznou to get up to speed, but few would’ve thought he’d be without his debut in November.

Where will Everton finish this season?

Aznou has played with the under-21s this season and he was again in action against Rochdale on Tuesday evening.

One thing was made very clear based on his performance.

Adam Aznou looked bright vs Rochdale

Aznou started against Rochdale in the National League Cup last night and played the full 90 minutes at left back.

Despite suffering a 1-0 defeat, the consensus was that Aznou looked really bright, and his potential shone through.

The Morocco international wasn’t really tested defensively, but the 19-year-old was excellent in possession of the ball, which you’d expect considering he came through Barcelona’s La Masia academy.

Evidently, there is bags of potential with Aznou, especially going forward, it’s just his ability to defend which may need developing that little bit extra.

Aznou has been working on his physicality at Finch Farm, which is an area of his game Moyes wants him to improve as well.

So, perhaps the teenager isn’t too far away from making his debut, especially heading into the busy festive period.

Adam Aznou may still head out on loan

It has been reported that Aznou wants to leave Everton in the January transfer window, with Spanish outfit Getafe interested.

Moyes will consider sending Aznou out on loan as he feels that may be best for his development, considering he can’t assure regular game time at the moment.

Vitali Mykolenko is out of contract in the summer, so there is an opportunity for the former Bayern Munich star to become first-choice next season.

So, there is a good roadmap for Aznou, he just needs to be patient and continue to work behind the scenes on his physicality and defending.

A loan move to a club in England would probably be more beneficial as it would better prepare him to play in the Premier League, which is arguably the most fast-paced division in the world.
