CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The Carolina Panthers will be without one of their most important defensive players when they play the NFC-best Los Angeles Rams this Sunday.
Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig was suspended by the NFL for one game after he punched 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings in the groin area during their Monday Night Football matchup on Nov. 24. That then led to some postgame shoving.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Moehrig -- who is Carolina’s second-leading tackler in 2025 -- planned to appeal the suspension. The Athletic’s Joe Person reported that appeal would be heard on Wednesday, Nov. 26. Moehrig’s appeal will be heard by Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster or Jordy Nelson.
Panthers head coach Dave Canales said Tuesday that he and Moehrig had a “good conversation” about the incident, but he declined to publicly say much more. Canales did add, though, that Moehrig was dealing with an ankle injury that had him day-to-day.
Moehrig has been a key piece of Carolina’s defense this season after he signed a three-year, $51 million in March. He leads the team in tackles for loss and has been one of the Panthers’ best run-stoppers, and one of the more consistent players overall.
If Moehrig loses his appeal and is indeed out for the Rams game, that could leave Carolina without two of its starting defensive backs with cornerback Jaycee Horn in the concussion protocol. Fellow corner Corey Thornton was also injured during Monday’s 20-9 loss to San Francisco, and he will be out for the year with a broken bone. Carolina has also dealt with several linebacker injuries.
Regardless of who is in or out Sunday, the Panthers will face a tall task in Week 13 when they host the Rams, who have MVP frontrunner Matthew Stafford leading one of the NFL’s best offenses.
The Panthers have been one of the worst scoring teams in the league in 2025 and will need a much better offensive showing than what they put out against San Francisco if they want to keep pace with the Rams.
FanDuel listed Carolina as a big, 10.5-point underdog to Los Angeles as of Wednesday morning.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. The game will be broadcast on Fox.
