Dropping Mohamed Salah has to be strongly considered by Arne Slot amid Liverpool's loss of form according to Dietmar Hamann, with the ex-Reds midfielder "pretty certain" Slot would be sacked if the Reds had started last season as they have done the current campaign.
Salah has scored five goals in all competitions this season as the reigning champions has slumped down to the bottom half of the Premier League table, losing half of their 12 matches so far.
Things have been more positive in the Champions League though, with Liverpool having won three of their four games ahead of the visit of Dutch side PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.
Ahead of that game though, Hamann says Slot needs to strongly consider leaving out last season's top scorer if the Reds are to improve.
“Does Arne Slot need to consider dropping Mohamed Salah? 100%, if he thinks it's the right thing to do. And I think there's reasons to do it," Hamann told CoinCasino.com.
“The only thing is that by dropping him, do you think things will get better? I'm not too sure. But obviously he's got to do something now. Because at the moment, they've got too many players who want to play with the ball and don't do the dirty work.
“So the balance of the team, the dynamics of the team just don't seem to be right. If he takes the decision to take Salah out of the team, he's got to do it. I'd probably back him if he would.”
Slot arrived to little fanfare last summer when the Dutchman replaced Jurgen Klopp in the Anfield hotseat, but he went on to surprise everyone by guiding the Reds to the Premier League title.
But Hamann feels that if the Reds were showing their current form last season when Slot didn't have that success in the bank then the Dutchman would be struggling to hold onto his job.
“If this run of form happened last season when Arne Slot joined the club, he wouldn't be in a job now," said Hamann.
"I'm pretty certain that's the case. He's got a lot of credit in the bank, and in a way, rightly so, because he won the league.
“But then again, that's in the past. He did wonderful things last season, and the team was fantastic to watch. They really bullied the Premier League last season, which nobody expected.
“But you've got to look forward now, and what you want to see is progress. If you don't see progress, I don't think last season will save him.”
