Patrick Mahomes committed to Texas Tech on April 21, 2013.
The three-star quarterback from Whitehouse, Texas chose the Red Raiders over offers from Oklahoma State and Rice. He was rated as the No. 29 pro-style quarterback in the 2014 recruiting class.
Part of the reason Mahomes chose Texas Tech was for their new offensive coordinator — Eric Morris. The former Texas Tech wide receiver returned to his alma mater ahead of the 2013 season to serve as co-offensive coordinator before being named OC after that season.
The two worked together over the entirety of Mahomes' career before he was drafted as the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Eight years later, Mahomes still talks highly of his college coordinator.
"He has a good feel for making you comfortable," Mahomes said in a press conference on Nov. 12. "I think that's the biggest thing. Obviously he can see talent, look at all the quarterbacks he's been with through all the different stops."

Through two full seasons as the starting quarterback at Texas Tech, Mahomes averaged more than 4,800 passing yards and 50 total touchdowns a season. After his junior season in 2016, he was awarded the Sammy Baugh Trophy, given annually to the top collegiate passer.
Mahomes spoke about what made Morris a great coach.
"He gives you confidence to go out there and be yourself and play the game the way you're supposed to play," Mahomes said. "And he'll change the offense for that. It's not surprising to me that he's had so much success."

This offseason, Mahomes and Morris met up. Mahomes loved seeing Morris' sons, Jack and George.
The Super Bowl champion and two-time NFL MVP believed that Morris would be great.
"I'm sure he'll continue to have success, whether at North Texas or wherever he ends up at," Mahomes said.
And now Morris has ended up as the head coach at Oklahoma State, a program that went 3-0 against Mahomes and the Red Raiders.
