Liverpool return to action on Wednesday night as they welcome PSV Eindhoven to Anfield in the Champions League, just five days after a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

The loss marked Liverpool’s sixth defeat in seven Premier League games and their eighth in 11 across all competitions, further intensifying scrutiny on manager Arne Slot.

Despite their Premier League struggles, Liverpool have been relatively consistent in the Champions League.

The Reds have won three of their four group-stage matches, including both home games against Atletico and Real Madrid.

While PSV may not match the same level of opposition, Liverpool will need to be fully alert for a game that offers the perfect opportunity to restore confidence ahead of the weekend’s Premier League trip to West Ham.

Slot has openly admitted he is “confused” by his team’s poor performances this season.

The Liverpool manager enjoyed a dream start to his tenure last season, winning the Premier League in his debut campaign.

Yet, despite a summer of significant investment in top-class players such as Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, the team has struggled to replicate that form.

The sudden decline has left Slot just as baffled as the fans.

“I’m also, like so many others, almost confused,” the Dutchman told TNT Sports.

“Like, how is this possible with so much quality available that I cannot find a way of winning with my team, which is also not completely true because people could also say we’ve won two out of the last four.

“We’ve won three out of four Champions League games, but now we’re in the Champions League, and we’re talking about the Premier League, and when we are in the Premier League, we cannot talk about our Champions League wins.

“But it’s clear that we’ve lost far too many games.”
