Wolves need to bring in some more firepower to their squad in the January transfer window

Wolves have the opportunity to make some signings in the January transfer window. New boss Rob Edwards will be looking to put his own stamp on the squad this winter. The former Watford, Luton Town and Middlesbrough man will also get the chance to sell some players if needed.

The Midlands outfit are rock bottom of the Premier League table after 12 fixtures. They are inside the drop zone along with Leeds United and Burnley. Crystal Palace beat them 2-0 at Molineux last time out and they are back in action this weekend away at Aston Villa.

Wolves should target Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott after Aston Villa struggles

Harvey Elliott’s future with loan side Aston Villa is up in the air at the moment and it remains to be seen at this stage whether he will be sticking around. They signed him on a temporary basis in the summer and he was allowed to move to Villa Park to get some regular game time under his belt. However, he has struggled for minutes under Unai Emery this season and is now in limbo.

Most signs point towards him heading back to Liverpool prematurely. The Reds will have a big decision to make on what to do with him next. He is unlikely to break into their starting XI under Arne Slot due to competition for his position at Anfield from the likes of Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo.

Therefore, Wolves should try and bring him in. He would be guaranteed playing time under Edwards’ guidance which is what he needs at this stage of his career. They were interested in him earlier this year but nothing materialised in the end before Aston Villa won the race for his signature.

Why Harvey Elliott is worth a gamble for Wolves

Wolves have nothing to lose now and can afford to take a gamble on someone like Elliott. There is no doubt that he has quality and that he can flourish at the right club. Aston Villa just hasn’t been the right fit for him and a change of scene will do him the world of good.

The ex-England youth international started out at Fulham and played three times for their first-team as a teenager before Liverpool swooped in. He has since made 149 appearances for the Reds altogether and has scored 15 goals. As well as Villa, he has also been loaned out by the Merseyside giants to Blackburn Rovers in the past in the Championship to boost his development.

Wolves look well on their way to a return to the second tier after a dismal term to date. Edwards has a tough job on his hands and could do with bringing in some new faces to freshen things up and give himself the best chance of guiding his new team to an unlikely survival. Elliott would give the 42-year-old another option to pick from at the top end of the pitch and something different to what he has at his disposal already. The player will also feel that he has a point to prove in the game amid his tricky stint at Aston Villa.
