Former Manchester United star Timothy Fosu-Mensah has emerged as a transfer target for Sheffield Wednesday. The 27-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2024 with now Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso likely playing a role in the decision to terminate his contract early.
After five years at United, Fosu-Mensah joined the German club in a £1.8million deal during the 2021 January transfer window. Serious knee and hamstring injuries saw him make just 30 appearances for Leverkusen over the span of three-and-a-half years, but he was able to celebrate their historic Bundesliga title win.
Despite having not played competitively since April 2023, the Star is reporting that Fosu-Mensah is being considered by Sheffield Wednesday. The Championship's bottom side are facing relegation to League One after being deducted 12 points.
But, the Owls certainly appear to be doing all they can to avoid being in England's third tier next season as shown by their attempts to sign someone with Fosu-Mensah's experience. United loannee Harry Amass is one of many players at Hillsborough that has impressed in this campaign despite Sheffield Wednesday managing just one victory.
Fosu-Mensah was handed his breakthrough into United's senior team by Louis van Gaal on the same day Marcus Rashford made his debut. He went on to make 30 appearances in the first-team with 11 of those coming under Jose Mourinho.
The right-back has been full of praise for the Portuguese tactician and recently made it clear that he played a big role in helping him mature.
He told The Sun in February 2024: “I spent the full season with the first team and, as a result, completed a full pre-season with them for the first time.
“I was still a teenager when Jose Mourinho arrived, and he helped me mature into becoming a man in footballing terms.
“Jose was tough on young players with his demands, but in a good way, because he wanted you to be ready to represent a club the size of Manchester United.”
Despite that, Fosu-Mensah was unable to make it at Old Trafford and upon realising that, wanted to depart in order to play more regular minutes.

Fosu-Mensah said: “It was my decision. The manager was good to me but at the end, I was not playing a lot. When you are 22, 23, or 24 years old you need to be playing.
“I didn’t play much and I wanted to. It was the best decision in the end to go somewhere else where I would get more minutes.”
Unfortunately, he was able to complete just 1,050 minutes for Leverkusen with the ex-United academy star making his ambitions for the coming years perfectly clear.
Speaking to World Football Index last year, he said: “I have had a few spells out with injury so I want to stay injury free in order to play and perform at the highest level.
“Of course, I want to win more trophies in my career but the most important thing is to be able to enjoy my football and play at the highest level of the game.”
