Wednesday’s matchup in Boston brings together the top two scoring defenses in the NBA’s Eastern Conference, with the Celtics leading the way allowing 110.0 points per game, followed by the Pistons at 112.6 ppg. The Pistons have emerged as a new-look powerhouse this season after showing signs of a breakout in 2024-’25 with the franchise’s first playoff appearance in six seasons. Now, with former No. 1 overall pick Cade Cunningham leading the way with his 27.1 points and 9.6 assists per game, the Pistons have accumulated the talent to make a run beyond the first-round exits that have marked their past four straight postseason appearances.

The Celtics continue to tread water at a high level, in large part because of that championship-caliber defense, with superstar Jayson Tatum sidelined as he recovers from a right Achilles injury. Boston lost its first three games of the season and didn’t get above a .500 record until last week, as part of a current stretch where the team has won four of its past five games. The Celtics now play a stretch against four straight playoff-grade opponents, with the Pistons on Wednesday, a Saturday-Sunday back-to-back on the road against the Timberwolves and Cavaliers and a Dec. 2 home game against the Knicks.
