The New York Knicks are off to a good start (10-6), but they may still need some players to become title favorites. One of them could be Dallas Mavericks forward Anthony Davis, who has only appeared in five games this season as he remains out with a calf injury.
On the other hand, the Mavs are 5-14 and have fired general manager Nico Harrison, who brought Davis from the LA Lakers in exchange for fan favorite Luka Doncic in the first place. With Kyrie Irving out with an Achilles injury and Davis' troubling injuries, the Mavericks' stars are already making headlines as trade subjects.
Amid this, the Knicks have emerged as a potential suitor for Davis, who is still the best two-way player in the NBA when healthy.
NBA insider update on Knicks' pursuit of Anthony Davis
According to SNY's Ian Begley, the Knicks would surely "at least check in with [the Dallas Mavericks] if/when Anthony Davis becomes available" as they continue to assemble wins that can win it all this season.
"If Dallas is offering Davis at a below-market cost, I'm sure the Knicks will at least give the move some thought," Begley said. "But this, again, is stating the obvious. The Mavs will get calls from nearly all NBA teams if/when they make Davis available."
Since being traded to Dallas, Davis has only played in 14 out of 46 games. His injury remains a big concern for any team looking to acquire him via trade.
The Knicks must tread with caution, as in order to get Davis, they might have to give up a lot of secondary players. However, if they can keep Davis healthy for the better part of the season, along with Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, they will legitimately push themselves in the conversations as the title favorites.
