Kevin Porter Jr. update brings hope to Bucks fans

The Milwaukee Bucks announced on Wednesday that Kevin Porter Jr. has been assigned to the G League for rehab activities. That might not sound like much, but for fans starved for another point guard and shot creator to help out Ryan Rollins, it’s a glimpse of sun breaking through storm clouds.

Once 100% healthy, Porter will supply instant energy boost to stagnant offense

Okay, maybe it’s the second-best news in the world for Bucks fans. First place would have to be Giannis Antetokounmpo’s return for tonight’s game against the Heat – which, despite his upgrade to questionable, probably won’t happen.

Still, both he and Porter are on the right track. It’s still possible that both players could take the floor Friday against the Knicks, though at least in Porter’s case that seems unlikely. Particularly with the quick turnaround playing the Nets on Saturday, he is probably scheduled to miss at least two more games.

The Bucks need him back badly. Rollins has everything in his power to keep this team afloat, but teams are catching onto him. Without Giannis, Rollins is essentially the only stand-alone threat on Milwaukee’s offense. Even with the Greek Freak alongside him, this team is clearly desperate for a creative boost.

Porter can give them that. It would be ill-advised to exaggerate nine minutes of play, but he sure looked like everything the Bucks were hoping for before spraining his ankle in the opener. 10 points, two assists, a steal, and two made threes. Porter was doing it all.

In addition to whatever time he spends with the Wisconsin Herd, Porter will in all likelihood need a few NBA games, perhaps even a couple of weeks, to get his feet back beneath him. This team is far too flawed – on both sides of the ball – for KPJ to be its savior.

Still, fans have reason to hope. Amid a five-game losing streak, there is an understandable pall of doom and gloom in Milwaukee. But once Porter and Giannis are back and fully healthy, with Rollins playing like a shoo-in for Most Improved Player, the Bucks could start stacking wins and gaining momentum.
