The Seattle Seahawks are adding an interesting depth option to the running back room in Cam Akers.
Record-chasing JSN could be NFL’s first 2,000-yard receiver
The Seahawks announced the addition of Akers to their action roster among a flurry of roster moves on Wednesday.
Akers may be a familiar name to Seattle fans. He was a second-round NFL Draft pick by one of the Seahawks’ division rivals, the Los Angeles Rams, out of Florida State in 2020.
Akers had a pair of strong seasons for the Rams early in his career. He rushed for 625 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games (five starts) as a rookie in 2020, and had a career-high 786 yards and seven TDs in 15 games (nine starts) in 2022.
The 5-foot-10, 217-pound Akers could give the Seahawks help in the passing game. He has 52 career receptions for 388 yards and four touchdowns.
Akers has twice suffered season-ending Achilles injuries, the last time being in 2023.
The Rams traded Akers to the Minnesota Vikings in 2023, and he has bounced around the league a bit since. He rushed for 444 yards over 17 games between Minnesota and the Houston Texans in 2024, and had 19 yards on five carries over three games with Minnesota this season.

The 26-year-old Akers perhaps brings some added value to scouting for Seattle as it prepares to play his most recent former team, the Vikings, at 1:05 p.m. Sunday at Lumen Field.
Akers, who has been up and down on the Vikings practice squad this year, was released by the team on Saturday. He last played for Minnesota on Oct. 5.
The reported addition of Akers probably isn’t a great sign about the health of third-string running back George Holani, who suffered a hamstring injury in the first half of last Sunday’s Seahawks win at Tennessee.
Radio coverage of Sunday’s Seahawks-Vikings game will be carried on Seattle Sports beginning at 10 a.m. with the pregame show.
