Liverpool star misses out CL clash vs PSV through illness

Liverpool look to get back to winning ways when they face PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday night at Anfield.

The Reds are heading into this match on the back of two straight defeats and have been poor in the Premier League, having lost six of their last seven games.

Arne Slot's side have done well so far in the Champions League, and they have won their previous two games in this competition.

The clash against PSV is more significant, given the scrutiny and pressure they are under, but the Reds are without one key player for this game.

When the teamsheet came out, everyone was surprised to find that Alisson Becker was not included in the squad.

According to a report from The Mirror, the Brazilian goalkeeper missed the clash due to illness, with his deputy Giorgi Mamardashvili taking the gloves.

The former AS Roma goalkeeper has already missed eight matches after picking up a muscle injury during their defeat to Galatasaray in Europe.

Alisson returned to the starting line-up in the 3-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest, and due was due to feature against Eindhoven.

Slot has made one more change to the side against Eindhoven, with Hugo Ekitike coming in for Alexander Isak.

Mamardashvili performed well in the absence of Alisson, but he was involved in Liverpool's slump as they suffered five defeats during his spell between the sticks.

Slot is currently missing several key players, especially in defence, with the likes of Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong, and Giovanni Leoni long-term absentees, while the latter is out for the rest of the season.

The Reds are also missing summer signing Florian Wirtz, but he is expected to return to action sooner rather than later.
