Can Depleted Celtics Snap Pistons’ Historic Winning Streak?

After two days off, the Boston Celtics return to action on Wednesday to host the Detroit Pistons at TD Garden. The surging Pistons are riding a 13-game winning streak, which is tied for the longest in franchise history. They haven’t had a winning streak this long since the middle of the 2003-04 season, which ended with their most recent NBA championship. Detroit hasn’t lost since Oct. 27, ripping off 13 straight wins. The Pistons lead the Eastern Conference at 15-2, which is the second-best record in basketball behind only the Oklahoma City Thunder (17-1). Detroit wraps up a four-game road trip tonight after winning the first three legs. The Pistons have won seven straight away games since dropping their season opener in Chicago on Oct. 22. They’ve played much better basketball since then, going 9-5 since that loss and winning four of their last five games. Story continues below advertisement Boston will be shorthanded tonight, however. Jayson Tatum remains out with an Achilles injury, while Neemias Queta has also been ruled out with a left ankle sprain. The Celtics have called up rookie Amari Williams from the G League to replace Queta, but that’s a tall task. Queta’s been one of the most impactful defensive players in the NBA this year thanks to his rim protection and rebounding, so Boston will miss his interior presence, especially against Jalen Duren. Story continues below advertisement This will be Queta’s first missed game of the season, so the Celtics will have to adjust without him. They still managed to beat the Orlando Magic on Sunday despite getting just six minutes from him, but Williams, Luka Garza and Josh Minott will need to step up in his absence. If they do, Boston will have a fighting chance. If not, the Pistons are going to be very difficult to beat.
