After a 12th consecutive loss in their cross-town rivalry against the New York Knicks on Monday, the Brooklyn Nets are 3-14, cementing themselves as one of the NBA's worst teams.
The Nets' rebuild is a slow one, and they became the first team in league history to use five first-round picks in last year's draft.
To help rookies like Egor Demin and Drake Powell develop, Sports Illustrated's Ivan White believes the Nets should entertain trade offers for sharpshooter Cam Thomas.
"He takes touches away from some of the younger guys and Porter, while not doing much to get those guys involved," White wrote. "While Thomas only went a couple of weeks before suffering an injury this season, it was quite clear in his limited time on the floor why the Nets wouldn’t give him anything close to his desired contract in the offseason."
How long should the Nets wait to trade Thomas?
To put it simply, the Nets are contenders to finish near the bottom of the league and should be in next summer's lottery.
Thomas is eligible for a trade next month and becomes an unrestricted free agent after the 2025-26 season. If Brooklyn receives phone calls from contending teams seeking a sixth man off the bench who can score, the front office shouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger.
Multiple hamstring injuries limited Thomas to 25 games last season, and he's currently out with another hamstring strain.
He averaged 21.4 points per game on 35% shooting from three in eight games before hitting the injured list.
