Virgil van Dijk looks dejected during Liverpool's humiliating 4-1 home loss to PSV

Liverpool's dreadful season suffered a new low when they were humiliated 4-1 at home by PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday evening. After Virgil van Dijk gifted an penalty for Ivan Perisic, Dominik Szoboszlai equalised only for a pathetic second-half showing from the home team to allow Guus Til and substitute Couhaib Driouech twice to score easy goals.

The result means Arne Slot's side still have plenty of work to do to qualify for the knockout stages with three games remaining in the opening stage, two of which are away.

The ECHO was in attendance at and here we run the rule over the performance of the players.

Giorgi Mamardashvili 5

No chance with the PSV penalty and otherwise barely involved first half. Possibly could have been quicker out for second but third and fourth weren't his fault.

Curtis Jones 4

Brought thrust down the wing from right-back before break and quick to press and challenge PSV players. Second half more difficult, however.

Ibrahima Konate 3

A couple of improvised challenges first half with PSV largely on the defensive until dreadful mistake allowed visitors in for third goal.

Virgil van Dijk 3

Mindless handball to concede penalty set the tone for the evening followed by silly booking, but unlucky to hit bar with header first half.

Milos Kerkez 5

One Liverpool player who showed fight during dire opening and maintained appetite throughout, and close with one effort

Ryan Gravenberch 4

Spells of decent possession but needed a bit more composure on occasion before break and almost disappeared completely at times after break.

Alexis Mac Allister 4

Tried to force himself into action but not everything came off as planned, and another who didn't do himself any favours after the break.

Mohamed Salah 4

Asked a lot of at times by some raking long balls but kept showing to unfortunately diminishing returns in the second half.

Dominik Szoboszlai 7

Far more effective in midfield, impressive on and off the ball and in right place to net leveller. Close enough in the second half with one effort.

Cody Gakpo 4

Worked hard to close down against his former team and shot prompted the equaliser but missed big chance second half.

Hugo Ekitike 6

Gradually warmed to his task, began linking well with team-mates and tested Kovar before break. Injury a worry, though. Subbed.

SUBS

Alexander Isak (for Ekitike 61) 4

Touched the ball a few more times than on Saturday and at least had a shot saved.

Federico Chiesa (for Konate 76) 5

Showed willingness to try to score but some obvious moments of frustration.
