The relationship between Jerry Jones and David Mulugheta, once fraught during the turbulent departure of Micah Parsons, is poised for a delicate reset.

With George Pickens emerging as a breakout star for the Dallas Cowboys, despite being held out of the first drive of a recent game with a fellow star receiver for disciplinary reasons, Jones now faces the prospect of negotiating with Mulugheta once again.

Pickens, acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers in May 2025, has blossomed into one of Dallas’ most reliable playmakers. Through 11 games, he’s racked up 67 catches for 1,054 yards and eight touchdowns, positioning him among the league’s top receivers.

With his rookie contract set to expire after the season, the Cowboys are now under pressure to lock him in long-term.

That’s where the awkwardness enters. Mulugheta, who represents Pickens, among others, is the same agent who played a central role in the messy contract fallout with Parsons earlier this year.

Dallas opted to trade Parsons to the Green Bay Packers rather than finalize a deal, following a protracted standoff that saw Jones publicly criticize Mulugheta and negotiate directly with Parsons instead.

At the time, Jones insisted that Mulugheta was “not a factor” in his decision. Now, however, reports indicate that Pickens’ upcoming extension will involve the very same agent.

According to NFL insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, despite their history, neither side expects drama, and negotiations are likely to be “handled professionally.”

But the underlying dynamics haven’t changed. The Cowboys face a tricky roster and financial puzzle. The team has already handed star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb a four-year, $136M deal in August 2024.

Lamb’s recent tendency to drop passes and his late-night rendezvous with Pickens in Las Vegas before a Raiders matchup could have Dallas ownership rethinking their receiver priorities.

In addition to Pickens, kicker Brandon Aubrey is also due for a new deal, and the former Fighting Irish kicker has been one of the best in the business since joining the Cowboys in 2023.

The franchise may only be able to apply one tag this offseason, a limitation that complicates Dallas’ long-term planning. Meanwhile, Mulugheta has historically opposed franchise tags for his clients and favored long-term guarantees instead.

For Jones and the Cowboys organization, the Pickens contract could double as a test: can they manage a high-stakes negotiation with Mulugheta without revisiting the bitterness that ended Parsons’ Dallas tenure?
