Arne Slot insists he’s “not worried” about his job – “feels the trust” of Liverpool chiefs

Arne Slot insists he still “feels the trust” of the Liverpool hierarchy and, despite his hapless side losing nine of their last 12 games, he is “not worried” about his job safety.

Slot saw more of the same unfold on Wednesday night as the Reds lost 4-1 to PSV Eindhoven, with those in the stands watching more of the same from the head coach.

There were only two changes to the starting lineup from Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest – one, Giorgi Mamardashvili for Alisson, enforced – and those now-familiar in-game issues quickly arose.

Losing nine games in 12 is considerable a sackable offence at many clubs, but speaking in his post-match press conference, Slot stressed he was “not worried.”

Slot accepts: “I need to do better”

“I don’t agree with you that the quality isn’t showing itself. I see enough moments that players show their quality,” he told reporters.

“It doesn’t reflect in the score or the results, that’s clear. But no, I’m not worried.

“What I mean by that is my focus is on other things than worrying about my own position.

“I try to analyse, try to help the players as much as I can and it’s obvious that I don’t do it in the way I did last season, because when you talk about individual errors, I think that’s also something that comes from a team effort.

“So again, I need to do better and that’s what I’m trying to do every single day, to improve the team.

“That is where my main focus is to be honest.”

Slot was asked whether he had held conversations with those in the Liverpool hierarchy, including sporting director Richard Hughes, and if so whether he felt they still backed him.

“Yeah but not in the sense that they tell me every single minute ‘we support you’, ‘we support you’, ‘we support you’,” he responded.

“We talk a lot. If we are winning, last season, and if we are losing. And then they are helpful to me, to the team.

“So yeah, we do have those conversations, but they don’t call me in every single minute of the day to tell me that they still trust me.

“We do have the normal conversations and in those conversations I feel the trust.

“But I haven’t spoken to them after this game yet, so let’s see!”

And questioned on how long it takes for him to digest a defeat in this extended run, he said: “Longer than after a win.

“Because after a win you are straight away focused on the next one.

“Now you try to find answers as much as you can, but that’s not as simple as people might think it is, because it would have been that simple I would have used those answers for us to start winning again.

“But the focus, as always in football, is mainly also about trying to prepare them for the next game.

“And preparing them is not only tactically, that could also mean that I need to have individual conversations tomorrow with players.

“I try to put as much effort in as I can to improve the situation – not only me by the way, my staff does the same.

“And the players are putting in a lot of effort as well, but sometimes when you look at 3-0 loss, 4-1 loss, you tend to feel as if ‘we don’t do enough’.

“But again today I saw a team that was trying, after multiple setbacks, but unfortunately not able to get the result.”
