Liverpool’s poor run continued as they suffered a 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The struggling Reds have now lost nine of their last 12 matches across all competitions.

Arne Slot’s domestic troubles are well-documented, arriving at this match following back-to-back three-goal defeats.

Yet the Champions League had offered some solace, with three wins in four matches, including an impressive victory over Real Madrid, putting Liverpool in a strong position in the group stage.

However, defeat to PSV now leaves Slot facing serious questions about the state of his team.

The visitors took the lead after just six minutes when Virgil van Dijk clumsily raised his arm to claim a foul, only to concede a penalty for handball. Ivan Perisic made no mistake from the spot.

Dominik Szoboszlai quickly equalised 10 minutes later after Cody Gakpo’s effort was parried by PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovár, and the rebound fell kindly to the midfielder, who made no mistake from close range.

Liverpool, desperate for a positive result, showed signs of improvement. Gakpo came close, and van Dijk saw his header crash against the bar.

PSV, however, regained the lead when Mauro Junior delivered a defence-splitting pass that allowed Guus Til to finish past Milos Kerkez, who was unable to stop him.

The visitors’ advantage was compounded as substitute Couhaib Driouech poked in Ricardo Pepi’s rebound, sending PSV fans into raptures.

Driouech then added a second in stoppage time, finishing low into the bottom corner following a swift counter-attack.

Liverpool have dropped to 13th following the defeat.

Speaking after the game, Curtis Jones told TNT Sports: “Unacceptable. I don’t even have the words.

“I’m past being angry and sad. I don’t have the words. I’m a player and a fan.

“I haven’t experienced a team player that bad.

“As of now we’re in the shit and it needs to change.

He added: “At the end of the day we still have that badge on our chest.

“Until that badge goes we’re gonna fight and try to get this team back to where it needs to be and show why Liverpool are the best team in the world.”
