Liverpool’s disastrous run has extended to nine defeats from their last 12 games in all competitions after a humiliating 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven at Anfield in the UEFA Champions League.
Arne Slot is now overseeing Liverpool’s worst run of form since 1953 and it is the third game in a row they have conceded three or more goals.
“The emotions are very negative and disappointing,” Slot said on TNT Sports.
“The way we conceded the 1-0. I want to be positive about the reaction of the players when we went 1-0 down. We came back into the game and had chances to go 2-1 up. I don’t think anyone thought we would lose 4-1.”
A Virgil van Dijk own goal helped the Dutch side take a 1-0 lead after six minutes, before Dominic Szoboszlai levelled, polishing off Cody Gakpo’s shot on the rebound after Matej Kovar’s save.
Goals to Guus Til, Couhaib Driouech and Ricardo Pepi piled on the mysery for the Anfield faithful as PSV revelled in their first win over an English side since 2007.
They moved up to 15th in the Champions League standings, while Liverpool dropped to 13th. Slot will be hoping for a rebound against West Ham in the Premier League on the weekend, so they can resolve a situation Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard described as not acceptable.
“No. It’s not (acceptable),” Gerrard said on TNT Sports.
“They are conceding so many goals They are wide open in transition. They look very vulnerable and unstable as soon as the ball turns over.
“Anfield tells a story. The seats are empty with 10 minutes to go, as soon as the third went in and the game was over.
“PSV were excellent by the way. Very comfortable, came here and enjoyed themselves, grew into the game. They thoroughly deserved their victory but Liverpool’s problems become deeper and the pressure intensifies even more. And there needs to be a lot of soul searching tonight, that’s for sure.”
Elsewhere, Arsenal prevailed 3-1 over Bayern Munich with goals to Jurrien Timber, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli to maintain their undefeated record in Europe, while Tottenham succumbed 5-3 to Paris Saint-Germain in an eight-goal thriller. Watch highlights from both games here.
