Southern has found its next football coach.
The university is going to hire NFL legend and Colorado running backs coach Marshall Faulk as its 22nd head coach, according to a report by Jordan Schultz.
Faulk has agreed to a three-year deal with an option for an additional season, Schultz reports.
This will be Faulk’s first time leading a program after getting into coaching this year as the running backs coach for Deion Sanders at Colorado.
Faulk, 52, was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2011 after a 12-year career, notching 12,279 rushing yards, 6,875 receiving yards and 136 total touchdowns.
He was a 2000 Super Bowl (XXIV) Champion with the St. Louis Rams and was the Associated Press NFL MVP that season. He is a seven-time Pro Bowler and a three-time All-Pro. He was also a major part of the Rams’ “Greatest Show on Turf” offense. After his playing career, he became an analyst at NFL Network.
Faulk will be the fifth different Southern coach since 2020, when Dawson Odums left the program to lead Norfolk State.
Athletic director Roman Banks fired coach Terrence Graves during his second season on Oct. 20 after the team lost 24-3 to Prairie View at its homecoming game, earning a 1-6 record to start the season. Southern made co-offensive coordinator Fred McNair the team’s interim coach.
Faulk attended Carver High School in New Orleans and then starred at San Diego State University.
Southern will close its regular season at 1 p.m. Saturday when it faces Grambling (7-4, 4-3) at the Bayou Classic at the Caesars Superdome.
