Liverpool suffered a humbling 4-1 loss against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League at Anfield.
PSV Eindhoven boss Peter Bosz told of his pride after his side dispatched Liverpool at Anfield.
The Reds suffered a sobering 4-1 defeat by the Dutch side in the Champions League to pile more pressure on under-fire head coach Arne Slot.
Liverpool went into the encounter against the backdrop of sixth losses in their previous seven Premier League games - and eight defeats in the past 11 games. Despite their insipid form, they were still heavy favourites to triumph over PSV.
Yet their problems continued as the visitors delivered a deserved triumph. Ivan Perisic opened the scoring from the penalty spot for PSV in the sixth minute but Liverpool fought their way back into the game and Dominik Szoboszlai equalised on 16 minutes. The Reds did dominate the rest of the first half, with Bosz admitted that it was a ‘lucky break’ the away side got into the interval level.
But PSV stepped things up in the second period to leave Liverpool shellshocked and win at Anfield for the first time in the club’s history. A delighted Bosz said: "I'm incredibly proud because we were able to put Liverpool under pressure. After the 1-1 draw, we struggled and had a lucky break. We did make some changes at halftime, but for me it was mainly about getting back into the game. We succeeded, and I enjoyed it.
Winning at Anfield is an achievement, of course. Beforehand, I probably would have settled for eight points in this group, but we have to stay sharp. We'll definitely celebrate tonight, but tomorrow our focus will be entirely on FC Volendam again. That's essential if you want to play at the top. It's always about the next match. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it at all before, but tonight I can enjoy it for a while.
"You don't always win 4-1, and sometimes the game isn't that fun. I've experienced that too, and I'll experience it again in the future.”
Bosz and Slot were former adversaries in Holland when the latter when in charge of Feyenoord before succeeding Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool boss in the summer of 2024. In his maiden campaign, Slot guided the Reds to the Premier League title.
But their defence is already over before December as they’re 11 points behind Arsenal. As a result, Slot’s role as Anfield supremo has come under pressure. Bosz revealed that he planned to have a nightcap with Slot after the pair conducted media duties - with the PSV chief suggesting that his counterpart needed a stiff drink. Bosz added: “We’re going to have a little drink together and then say something. Possibly something strong, hey?”
