Enzo Maresca has backed his current goalkeepers but the club could splurge on a new shot-stopper.
Chelsea could look to reignite transfer interest in AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan come the New Year after making an impression in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Enzo Maresca’s side turned the heads of the continent with an emphatic 3-0 win over Barcelona at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night. Several Blues stars put in scintillating displays with Willian Estevao, Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez looking particularly impressive.
That victory marked Chelsea as real contenders to go far in the Champions League and will do no harm when it comes to attracting fresh talent to the club in January. The opportunity to join an all firing Champions League campaign could be used as a major selling factor.
Chelsea look to reignite AC Milan transfer
After the win over Barcelona, Sky Sports report that Chelsea could look to breathe new life into a transfer move for AC Milan shot stopper Maignan. The goalkeeper was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge prior to the Club World Cup this summer but saw a bid of around £18 million rejected.
After that saga, Maresca stood by his goalkeeping options. He said: "The keeper situation is simple, Robert is No.1, Filip is No.2, and we will analyse and judge Penders. Maignan and different players at other clubs - I don't think it is worth talking about them."
Sanchez has put in some impressive performances this season but still regularly frustrates Maresca with his distribution and is capable of hot headed moments such as the red card against Manchester United.
Mike Maignan keen for Premier League switch
Sky Sports claim that Chelsea are actively looking to rework their goalkeeping options in January with fresh interest in Maignan over recent days. It’s added that the club will have to sanction the sale of Filip Jorgensen in order to make space for an incoming.
Chelsea are reported to have made fresh contact with Milan over the availability of Maignan. The goalkeeper is not going to be extending his contract in Italy and is thought to be keen on a Premier League switch.
Maignan is out of contract at AC Milan this summer and is known to have rejected an extension that would have kept him at the club until 2028. Chelsea would face competition from Juventus, who are looking to replace goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio.
The French international has made 11 Serie A appearances so far this season and captains AC Milan. The side have lost just once so far this term and recorded a 1-0 win over Inter Milan last weekend.
Former Chelsea midfielder Christian Pulisic is playing alongside Maignan at AC MIlan and the goalkeeper would arrive at Stamford Bridge with Pulisic’s approval. Posting a message on social media platform Instagram this weekend, the former Blues star praised Maignan for being ‘unbelievable’ in the win over Inter.
