Curtis Jones claimed that his Liverpool teammates have to be 'dogs' after suffering a 1-4 loss to PSV
After Liverpool suffered a stunning 4-1 loss against Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, star midfielder Curtis Jones urged his teammates to show more courage and determination. The Englishman claimed that his side has to be better off the ball and probably 'smash someone' on the opposition side to re-capture their winning form.
Goals from Ivan Perisic (6', penalty), Guus Til (56') and substitute Couhaib Driouech (73', 90+2') overwhelmed the Reds at Anfield. The Dutch side condemned Arne Slot's side to their third defeat in a row and the ninth in their last 12 games across all competitions.
Speaking to CBS Sports after the game, Jones was visibly upset with proceedings. He claimed that his teammates had to show more passion and set an example for each other, saying (via Give Me Sport):
"It starts with just wanting to be a man out there and just wanting to tackle someone and be a dog out there. It's not always the fact that we've got these lads who are nice on the ball and we're just playing, playing, playing. Go and smash someone... The lads are looking at me as well and saying, 'Go on then. Go smash someone.'"
In response to Jones' comments, Carragher asserted that the midfielder must follow his own advice before asking the same from his fellow squad members. The Liverpool legend said:
"He's passionate and obviously hurting right now. I'd love to have seen Mohamed Salah speaking there, but when he's saying, 'we need to put a tackle in, we need to go for the ball', who's stopping you?"
Liverpool currently sit 12th in the EPL standings (18 points in 12 games) and 13th in the UCL league phase table (nine points in five games).
"I have to be positive" - Liverpool boss Arne Slot defends his players' mentality after 1-4 loss to PSV
After a 1-4 loss to PSV in the UEFA Champions League, Liverpool manager Arne Slot claimed that he wasn't worried about his players' mentality.
The Dutch tactician said that he was pleased with his side's response after going 1-0 down in the 6th minute. In an interview on TNT Sports, he claimed that his team did not deserve a 4-1 beating after their strong first-half showing, saying (via Hayters):
"I’m looking at the screen now and I see the way we conceded 1-0, but I have to be positive about the reaction of the players after we went 1-0 down. Because I think until half-time we played a very good game. After the early disappointment, we came back into the game. I think we had enough chances to go 2-1 up. At half-time I don’t think anyone would have expected us to lose this game 4-1."
Furthermore, Slot claimed that his team will have to 'fight hard' to get back in the winners' column. He added:
"I mean with that is we just have to face where we are in and fight really hard. It would be nice if we don’t get this knock off a goal we concede."
Up next, Liverpool will take on West Ham United in a Premier League fixture on Sunday (November 30).
