Liverpool’s embarrassing 4-1 defeat to PSV at home in the Champions League on Wednesday night marked a new low for Arne Slot’s men this season
It was the clubs ninth defeat in their last 12 matches across all competitions, was marked by calamitous defensive errors, a toxic atmosphere at the final whistle, and mounting questions regarding the future of head coach Arne Slot.
Liverpool have now conceded three or more goals in three consecutive games for the first time since 1992. The partnership of Van Dijk and Konate appeared disjointed, with individual errors directly leading to three of PSV’s four goals.
Arne Slot, now well into his second season, cut a lonely figure on the touchline. With the team looking devoid of confidence and structure, speculation is already mounting over his position.
However, Steven Gerrard has refused to use the word crises to describe the situation, speaking to TNT Sports:
“Crisis is a strong word, and disrespectful to some of the players that have delivered for this club, and for the manager that’s delivered three months ago,”
“But you cannot deny the team is struggling massively, they’re on a terrible run, confidence is at an all-time low and they just keep bleeding.”
“Unless the manager can find answers and stability in the team it’s going to continue.”
Meanwhile Steve McManaman believes it’s too early to speak about dismissing Arne Slot:
“I think it’s far too early for such questions,” he said. “They would have to go out of the Champions League and be wallowing near the bottom of the league.
“They play Arsenal second week of January, that’s when the question should be asked. They’ll be halfway through the season by then.”
Liverpool must now regroup quickly before facing West Ham away in the Premier League on Sunday.
“That’s not good enough!”
