Nuno has to master starting lineup to beat lacklustre Liverpool

By Conor Hogan

**West Ham face Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday — and the Hammers could have a real chance of getting a result against the Reds.**

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side have enjoyed an impressive November, claiming seven points from a possible nine. In contrast, Liverpool have won just one of their last seven games, losing the other six.

Given the form of both sides, West Ham have a genuine opportunity to secure a rare three points against Arne Slot’s team at the London Stadium this weekend — but the correct team selection is vital if Nuno’s men are to stand a chance.

The Hammers lined up with three centre-backs against Bournemouth last weekend, but I believe Nuno should revert to the 4-3-3 that delivered victories over Newcastle and Burnley before the international break.

Alphonse Areola, after his heroic display on the south coast, should of course keep his place in goal. But if Nuno switches to a back four, one of the three centre-halves used against Andoni Iraola’s side will have to make way.

While the manager would likely drop Igor Julio in favour of Jean-Clair Todibo and Max Kilman, I would actually be inclined to leave out the Englishman, whose handball sparked the collapse at the Vitality Stadium. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and El Hadji Malick Diouf should remain as the starting full-backs.

After serving his suspension, Lucas Paquetà is available again and should return to midfield alongside Freddie Potts and Mateus Fernandes. When used together, that trio has provided balance, energy and creativity — and they could be key to victory on Sunday.

Jarrod Bowen will take up his usual role on the right wing, with Callum Wilson leading the line after his brace last weekend. The real dilemma lies on the left.

Crysencio Summerville missed the Bournemouth match and, although his injury is believed to be minor, it would be a surprise to see him feature on Sunday. Luis Guilherme started on the left at the Vitality but struggled to impact the game and was withdrawn at half-time.

His replacement was Kyle Walker-Peters — a right-back who has been used on the left wing several times this season. On Sunday, I’d be inclined to start him there.

The 28-year-old isn’t particularly pacy or tricky, but he is tidy in possession and reads the game superbly well. He would add defensive solidity in transitions and could rotate positions with the rapid Malick Diouf to create a fresh dynamic down the left-hand side.

Guilherme could then be introduced from the bench if the Hammers need more risk or attacking spark. Likewise, George Earthy and Callum Marshall — both of whom scored for the young Hammers against Truro this week — could provide energy late on.

Sunday marks the beginning of a busy festive period for West Ham. Nuno must manage his small squad wisely to collect as many points — and pick up as few injuries — as possible.

Liverpool are there for the taking this weekend. No matter who starts, the hope will be that the “good” West Ham team turns up and puts in a real shift against the rocky Reds.
