It isn’t uncommon for artists to use a stage name to help protect their legal identity. The name can be completely random or influenced by their real one.

Post Malone is one of the biggest musical artists today, gaining popularity through a blend of hip-hop, R&B and pop. He released his sixth studio album in 2020, but flipped the script soon after, putting out 18 country songs and stepping into a new genre. He has won several awards throughout his career, but a Grammy has remained elusive. He has 18 Grammy nominations, but is still chasing his first win.

Post Malone name origin

Malone uses his real-life last name for the first name of his stage name. Many wondered where the "Malone" came from. There were rumors that he did it as a tribute to Karl Malone, but that was never confirmed by the artist. Post Malone himself said that he simply got Malone from playing around with a rap name generator. He wanted something that rolled off the tongue like "Wiz Khalifa."

Malone said in an interview on "The Tonight Show" with Jimmy Fallon, ""I was like 14, and I had started getting into producing and rapping and singing over my own stuff. And I needed a name, you know, for my s---- mixtape. So I ran [my real name] through a random rap name generator... now I'm stuck with it."

Malone isn't the only artist to have gone this route. Childish Gambino reportedly found his stage name through a Wu-Tang clan name generator.
