One of the best defenders ever has now admitted he was so close to signing for Chelsea

The 21st century has seen Chelsea fans enjoy the services of some of the best players in world football over the years.

Roman Abramovich’s bold and aggressive transfer policy often meant that the likes of Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti had the best players available to them to try and win the Premier League.

The likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole have gone down in history both in England and Europe, with the left-back seen as one of the best to feature in his role.

Cole joked that he would only be worth about £10m in the current game, however would arguably be the most expensive player in his position.

Roberto Carlos says he nearly joined Chelsea

Very few players signed for the Blues in this position due to how dominant Cole was, however this didn’t stop the clubs holding talks with Roberto Carlos.

The Brazilian told the Obi One Podcast that he had held talks with Abramovich over a potential move to Stamford Bridge, and was ready to sign a contract with Chelsea.

He said: “In 2007 when my contract with Real Madrid ended. I didn’t renew it. Peter Kenyon called me. Yes. Peter Canyon called me in 2007 asking me if I wanted to join Chelsea.

“But the left back was Ashley Cole. Ashley Cole. Ashley Cole. Yeah. Yeah. And I met with Peter Kenyon and Abramovich in Paris. In Paris, everything was ready to sign the contract, but it didn’t work out because of the numbers.”

After leaving Madrid, the full-back would go on to join Fenerbahce, before a move to Corinthians, Anzhi and Delhi Dynamos before retiring.

Carlos impressed by Chelsea star

Despite never featuring for the club, he has kept a keen eye on things going on at Stamford Bridge over the past two seasons.

Carlos is a huge fan of Cole Palmer, and Chelsea fans are waiting impatiently for him to return to action.

Palmer was desperate to face Barcelona in the Champions League, but has had to wait before making his return.
