“Weakest link” – Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike slammed as ‘real disaster’ by pundit

On Wednesday, Liverpool suffered a 4-1 Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven at Anfield.

The Reds have now suffered back-to-back defeats at home. The result means Arne Slot’s side have three wins from their last 12 matches in all competitions.

Dutch pundit Youri Mulder, who represented Twente and Schalke during his playing career, singled out Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitiké after the defeat to PSV.

He was analysing the Premier League winners’ performance against PSV for Ziggo Sport. Voetbal Zone have relayed his comments and the former Netherlands international claims the striker was the ‘weakest link’ in their latest loss.

“I thought Ekitike was a real disaster,” he said.

Ekitiké was leading Liverpool’s attack yesterday and was replaced by Alexander Isak in the 61st minute. After the match, Slot confirmed the 23-year-old France international has an injury issue.

Mulder may not have taken this into consideration when slamming the Liverpool summer signing. He was also critical of Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

“Mac Allister hasn’t been playing well for weeks either,” Mulder explained.

The Dutchman insists he isn’t surprised that Liverpool players appeared tired towards the end of the match.

“They’re loners on the pitch. They’re not a team that works together,” he added.

“Just look at the distances they have to cover. So, it’s no wonder they’re exhausted at the end of the game. They’re poor on the ball. The collective spirit is completely lacking. Sometimes I found it quite distressing.”

Theo Janssen, another former Netherlands international, said Liverpool’s confidence has ‘completely vanished’.

“That’s what you see. There was a phase in the first half, after about 20 minutes, where they had the upper hand. There was something in it then. But the pace was very slow,” he said.
