Jamie Carragher delivers his Arne Slot sack verdict after Liverpool dominated by PSV

Speculation over Arne Slot’s Liverpool future has ramped up again on the back of a 4-1 loss to PSV.

After losing to Nottingham Forest at Anfield, it was claimed that the Reds were still backing Slot as their manager.

However, things have now gone from bad to worse, with Liverpool’s defeat to PSV seeing the current Premier League champions enduring a spell of nine defeats in 12, which is their joint-worst run since all the way back in 1953/54.

Fans have called for Slot to be replaced already, and former centre-back Jamie Carragher has now weighed in on the situation.

Jamie Carragher doesn’t want Arne Slot sacked yet

Speaking live on CBS Sports shortly after Wednesday’s game, Carragher shared that he isn’t quite there when it comes to a change of coach.

Instead, he opted to direct a lot of his frustration towards the Liverpool players.

He said: “I couldn’t believe at the weekend that people were talking about the manager’s job, when I spoke to Liverpool supporters after losing at home to Nottingham Forest.

“It’s only going to amplify now and I’ve always been in the camp of you stick the manager because I’m angry with the players if I’m being totally honest. I’m really angry with the players but it does get to a stage with any manager, at any club, I always use this word, untenable.

“It almost feels like it can’t go on any longer. I’m not quite there yet personally in terms of the manager, but I know a lot of supporters will be.”

Interestingly, Steve McManaman had a similar view on the Dutchman, while Danny Murphy thinks the next week is going to be huge for the Liverpool boss.

What Liverpool legends are saying about Arne Slot’s future

“It almost feels like it can’t go on any longer. I’m not

quite there yet personally in terms of the manager, but I know I’m a lot of

supporters will be.” – Jamie Carragher

“Let’s hope we don’t have to have that conversation. I

like Slot, especially after meeting him – he’s got a bit about him. He’s

bright, he’s warm. But it doesn’t matter what you’ve done before or if you’re

liked. It’s irrelevant when you’re constantly losing games with Liverpool. So

he’s got a big, big week ahead of him.” – Danny Murphy

“I think no. I think it’s far too early, what he’s

achieved and where he is now this year, that’s a good run of fixtures. I understand the question completely but with that run

of fixtures, Liverpool still fighting in the Champions League, it’s far too

early to come up with a question like that.”

– Steve McManaman

There is only one clear winner in Liverpool players vs Arne Slot debate

Carragher’s point is valid, as it is clear that a lot of Liverpool players have just stopped giving their all for Slot.

Unfortunately, this is football, and player power, 99% of the time, will win out over a coach.

Liverpool spent over £400m in the summer transfer window, and it’s hard to see FSG simply giving up on all of their new superstars.

Instead, the most likely outcome, whether that is this week or at some point in 2025/26, is that Slot is replaced.
