Liverpool were beaten 4-1 at home by PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday night
Arne Slot’s side went 1-0 down inside just six minutes via an Ivan Perisic penalty which was awarded after blatant handball from Virgil van Dijk. Dominik Szoboszlai equalised for the hosts who then dominated proceedings but were unable to get themselves in front.
Guus Til put PSV ahead on 56 minutes with Couhaib Driouech scoring twice to hand Liverpool another three-goal loss on home soil in what was a deserved win for the Dutch side in the end. Liverpool have lost nine of their last 12 games with Wednesday’s loss following a 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
Boos rang around the stadium at full time with the Reds dropping to 13th in the Champions League table and facing a big fight to earn automatic promotion with Inter Milan and Marseille up next.
Gerrard was in the studio for TNT Sports and believes the club’s biggest problem is how open they are on transition. He also pointed to how the dwindling atmosphere at Anfield in the latter stages of the game “told a story”.
“They're in a real difficult moment,” he said. “Whoever is managing Liverpool right now would pick Mo Salah. Liverpool need all the good players on the pitch to try and find some stability.
“They're conceding too many goals, they're wide open in transition. Look very vulnerable and unstable soon as the ball turns over.
“Anfield tells a story, the seats were empty with 10 minutes to go, as soon as the third goal went in the game was over. Liverpool's problems become deeper, the pressure intensifies even more. There needs to be a lot of soul searching tonight for sure.”
Up next for the Reds is a trip to West Ham United in the Premier League. Two back-to-back defeats at Anfield spell concern for Slot with Liverpool losing both matches by three goals. The Reds’ form away from home had been questionable but Anfield had provided some respite amid a torrid start to the campaign.
That home form has now evaporated and could completely derail Liverpool’s campaign if they’re unable to start winning at home again.
Slot said: “I think it is a shock for everyone. For the players, for the journalists in here, for me, for everyone. This is a shock and it’s very, very, very unexpected if you look at the quality we have. Is it a lack of confidence? I didn’t see that in the first half.
“Of course, it is hard if after losing 3-0, straight into this game you concede a goal. I saw the mentality these players have shown so many times since I am here, came back in a way you would like to come back, created chances, we kept them in their half – and after another setback by conceding the 2-1, I also saw us creating chances again to score the 2-2. But, in the end of the game, I did see it affected maybe one or two players that we were 3-1 and 4-1 down, that’s true.”
