Marseille 2-1 Newcastle United post match reaction
Newcastle United latest news: Bruno Guimaraes has branded his side’s performance against Marseille as ‘sloppy’.
Two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang within the first five minutes of the second half secured Marseille a vital Champions League victory but thrust yet more away day misery onto Newcastle United. Speaking to the media after the match, Guimaraes believes his side ‘have to learn’ from their experience in France and has challenged his teammates to do better in holding onto winning positions.
Guimaraes said: “Five to 10 minutes, we started the game so well, strong, kept the ball, aggressive, positive. In the second half, we just were not in the pitch for 5-10 minutes and conceded two goals. Shocking, sloppy with and without the ball. Very sad for today.
“I think we were in a great position after the first half, playing well but we have to learn, we have to learn with games like that, we are still in a great position. But games like today, it's tough to accept the defeat.
Guimaraes added: “No, I think we cannot explain. Sloppy, I don't know what happened. We spoke in the changing room to start the second half like we did in the first half, but this did not happen. And it cost us the game.
“We have to learn, We know the amount of games we have so, yes, sad day, sad day. I'm very disappointed, but we have to keep going.
“Today, I don't think it was that bad, to be honest. I think in the first half, we had the chance to make it 2-0. And the second half, 5-10 minutes, cost us the game. I think it was too slow, I don't know what happened.

“We cannot accept this. We have to play better, especially when we're winning.”
Bruno Guimaraes posts 13-word statement
Just four days on from their defeat at Stade Velodrome, the Magpies head to the Hill Dickinson Stadium for the first time ever when they face the Toffees in Premier League action. Saturday’s game will mark the first time that Newcastle United have played at Everton’s new stadium as they search for a first league away win of the season.
Their last win in the league on their travels came back in April when they beat a hapless Leicester City side at the King Power Stadium. The Foxes would go on to be relegated just a few weeks later.
Guimaraes will be tasked with leading his teammates out on Merseyside and be the man they look to to transform their fortunes away from home. With away games against Bayer Leverkusen and Sunderland to come next month before a festive period that sees them face Manchester United and Burnley on the road, the Magpies will be desperate to right their fortunes away from home as soon as possible.
For Guimaraes, only togetherness will allow them to do that. The Brazilian posted an Instagram story of him in action against Marseille with the caption: ‘In the good, the bad, and in every moment. We remain together. @nufc🖤🤍’
