Liverpool continued to prove even Premier League champions can be absolutely hopeless with a truly wretched Champions League defeat at home to PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday evening. Despite Dominik Szoboszlai equalising an early Ivan Perisic penalty, Arne Slot's side posted a genuinely horrific second-half showing to lose 4-1 to the Dutch outfit.

The result means the Reds have now given themselves a difficult task to reach the Champions League knockout stages with games at Inter Milan and Marseille to come along with a home clash against Qarabag.

But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at Anfield...

Virgil vexed

Anfield has become a gloomy place for supporters with the Reds having shipped 10 goals in their last three home games. And it hasn't been much fun for the players, either.

Virgil van Dijk suffered something of a personal nightmare when gifting PSV their early penalty and then becoming increasingly frustrated at the failures both of himself and the players around him.

And just before half-time it was referee Alejandro Hernandez in the firing line when he failed to award a handball against Perisic, prompting a furious initial response from Van Dijk, who could barely believe it.

Til closed

Mind you, Van Dijk wasn't the only person to be annoyed by some of the officiating. And earlier in the first half, it was a visiting player who had reason to be irked.

Guus Til, who went on to score PSV's second goal, was forced off for treatment having taken a blow to the face when attempting to defend a set-piece.

And the Holland international appeared to be involved in a borderline pushing match with the fourth official and a backroom colleague on the touchline as he was made to wait before later re-entering the play. Steady on, old bean.

PSV glee

If Liverpool fans were less than impressed, the PSV support were absolutely loving it. Indeed, they must have known what was coming as the away end was packed more than an hour before kick-off.

And while Slot was spared the now regular taunts of "you're getting sacked in the morning" from opposing fans, there was instead another song being aired towards the end of the match.

"Always look on the bright side of life," crooned the PSV followers. That will be quite difficult for those of a Red persuasion today.
