Is Sam LaPorta out for the season? Explaining injury news for Lions' star tight end

The Detroit Lions are relying on backup tight end Brock Wright.

That's not what they'd ideally want, but it's the spot they find themselves in with Sam LaPorta injured.

LaPorta is one of the NFL's best tight ends. He adds a dynamic target to the Detroit offense to go with wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.

Right now, though, there's no LaPorta to be found.

Is Sam LaPorta out for the season?

Sam LaPorta is probably out for the season.

LaPorta was originally injured in Week 10, hurting his back.

He was placed on Injured Reserve and has to miss at least two more weeks, beginning with Week 13.

LaPorta had to get a form of back surgery and may not get return at all.

"I think we would be fortunate to have a chance to get him back for the rest of the season," Campbell said, via ESPN's Eric Woodyard. "I think that's very, very slim."

Sounds like Wright will have to uphold the mantle in the meantime.

It's not ideal, but it's the NFL, and next-man up has to be the order of the day.
