Huddersfield Town midfielder Leo Castledine described Tuesday’s defeat to Luton Town as a “bump in the road” as his side look to return to winning ways against AFC Wimbledon this weekend.

The Terriers suffered a 2-1 loss at Kenilworth Road in midweek, a result that brought an end to a run of three straight victories for Town in all competitions.

Jake Richards gave the hosts the lead shortly after the half-hour mark, before Castledine brought Town level with a superb free-kick in the 64th minute that found the top corner.

Jerry Yates netted the winning goal 19 minutes from time, leaving Town in eighth place in League One, on 25 points from 16 matches played, heading into Saturday's encounter at home to ninth-placed AFC Wimbledon.

Reflecting on Tuesday’s defeat, Castledine told BBC Radio Leeds: “It’s tough. Obviously I’m always going to be happy with myself to score and help the team out, that’s always what I’m going to set out to do anyway, and to score a goal like that, every player wants to do that, so on that side, obviously I’m happy about it, but it’s bittersweet.

“It’s difficult, because I think we caused our own mistakes today. There was a game there for us that we could come here and win. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy, it’s a tough place to come to, but I think it was there, and we kind of let it slip.

“The first half, we were back in, we were defending, but to be honest I thought we were defending well, we were holding our own, holding our block, and then coming out in the second half we started sharp. We immediately had chances on goal, and we were threatening, and then the goal comes, so it’s looking more positive, and then to concede the second is just such a killer, so it was tough.

“Our last three games we’ve won, and we’re all sky high, we’re all confident, so we definitely came into this game thinking there’s no doubt [they can win] – to be honest we go into most games thinking that, even when we had a tough spell, so I think that’s what’s most disappointing about today.

“This isn’t going to stop us, it’s a bump in the road, we’ve all been there. We go again Saturday, Wimbledon’s a big game at home, we need the fans to get behind us again, put this one to bed and we’ll go again.”

Castledine’s excellent free-kick was his fifth goal of the season, and reflecting on his latest strike, the midfielder said: “To be honest with you, even as me and Ruben (Roosken) were standing up next to it, first of all I said ‘I’m taking this’, and then the second thing I said was ‘I’m going to go keeper’s side’, before he even set it up.

“I just think naturally in the position that it was, I’d assumed that he thought I was going to go on the side of where the wall was, so I just hedged my bets that he’d kind of cheat a little bit, and if I can put it close enough to the corner, it will go in.

“I only looked up right at the last minute. It was quite far out, so I just wanted to focus on a clean strike, try not to hit it into the wall. I just put my head down, and then as soon as I looked up, I heard all the fans, and I was like ‘oh my God it’s gone in’."
