Liverpool could now repeat Man Utd managerial trick that led to one of the best runs in history - opinion

Liverpool may need to look for a new manager if results do not improve under Arne Slot.

On the back of the PSV hammering, the Reds have lost nine of their last 12 matches in all competitions.

This, as expected, has seen Arne Slot asked about his future in the Anfield dugout.

Arne Slot says he is not worried about losing his job at Liverpool

“No, I am not worried. My focus is on other things than worrying about my own position. I need to do better.”

Slot may not be worried, but can he really keep his job for much longer if things don’t improve quickly?

A meeting with West Ham United awaits, and anything but a win will surely have Liverpool’s hierarchy on the lookout for a new manager.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blueprint could save Liverpool’s season

However, we are midway through the campaign, and a lot of top coaches are already in work.

After links to Liverpool last week, Real Madrid are backing Xabi Alonso, so he’s unlikely to be an option.

Similarly, fans have called for Oliver Glasner to be appointed, but it’s hard to see Crystal Palace wanting to let him go in the middle of the season.

As a result, the Reds could look to copy the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blueprint laid out by Manchester United in 2018/19.

After Jose Mourinho departed, the Norwegian was placed in caretaker charge of the Red Devils, who thrived under their former player.

Solskjaer won six of his first seven Premier League games (no manager had won their first seven at the time) in the Old Trafford dugout, and enjoyed an 11-game unbeaten run across all competitions.

When it comes to Liverpool appointing a former player on a temporary basis to boost morale, Steven Gerrard seems the most logical option.

What Steven Gerrard has said about managing Liverpool

The former midfielder is currently out of work. Gerrard was liked by Middlesbrough when they were searching for a Rob Edwards replacement earlier this month, but the Teessiders went in a different direction.

His record as a manager is by no means amazing, but as Solskjaer showed at Utd, former players can still bring success even if they’re not the best coach.

Gerrard commented on becoming Liverpool manager back in 2020, admitting it was a dream of his.

He said: “I get asked this question a lot and, for me, what will be will be.

“Would I love to be the coach of Liverpool one day? Is it a dream? Of course.”
