Liverpool sources: Arne Slot ‘backed by FSG’ – position ‘unchanged’ after PSV loss

Arne Slot remains safe in his position as Liverpool head coach despite an ongoing run of nine defeats in 12 games, according to sources close to the situation.

That is per the Mail‘s Lewis Steele, who writes following Wednesday’s 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.

Steele explains that Slot “retains the backing of the Liverpool hierarchy despite knowing he is under pressure.”

“Sources close to both Liverpool and Slot himself have insisted this morning that his position as head coach is safe and that has not changed after the defeat to PSV,” the journalist adds.

What Arne Slot said about talks with Liverpool bosses

This comes after a strong response from the Dutchman in his post-match press conference, where he insisted he is “not worried” about his job.

One of the questions posed to Slot concerned whether he had spoken with the Liverpool leadership, specifically sporting director Richard Hughes, and if those conversations confirmed their continued support.

“Yeah but not in the sense that they tell me every single minute ‘we support you’, ‘we support you’, ‘we support you’,” he responded.

“We talk a lot. If we are winning, last season, and if we are losing. And then they are helpful to me, to the team.

“So yeah, we do have those conversations, but they don’t call me in every single minute of the day to tell me that they still trust me.

“We do have the normal conversations and in those conversations I feel the trust.”

At the time Slot explained that, naturally, he was yet to speak to any of the Liverpool hierarchy following his side’s latest defeat, but it is almost certain contact has now been made.

If this latest update is to be believed, then, it would indicate that the 47-year-old has at least been given more time to change his side’s fortunes.

The games Arne Slot needs to win to restore faith

The clashes with Nottingham Forest and PSV – which resulted in 3-0 and 4-1 losses at Anfield – were earmarked as the start of a more comfortable run of fixtures for the Premier League champions.

Next up is a trip to West Ham, who are currently 17th in the table but took a two-goal lead over Bournemouth in their most recent game before going on to draw 2-2.

After that comes meetings with Sunderland, Leeds, Inter Milan and Brighton, before a trip to Tottenham on December 20 marks what is expected to be the first game of Mohamed Salah‘s absence at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Clearly if Liverpool continue to drop points in the next month the scrutiny over Slot’s future will only grow – and while Steele reports that there is still faith at Fenway Sports Group, that could certainly change.
