Arne Slot urged to 'do the right thing' as brutal Liverpool sack verdict issued

Liverpool reached a new low under Arne Slot, continuing a historically bad run with a 4-1 loss to PSV in the Champions League

Arne Slot finds himself under immense pressure just half a year on from winning the Premier League title, with a historically bad run for Liverpool continuing with a limp 4-1 loss to PSV in the Champions League - and some fans in the Liverpool Echo comments section are rapidly running out of patience.

Dominic Szoboslai struck after sixteen minutes to cancel out PSV ace Ivan Perisic's penalty, gifted to the opposition thanks to a handball from Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool were able to see out the half, but the team fell apart after the break, conceding loose goals from Guus Til and substitute Couhaib Driouech.

It was the Premier League champions' ninth loss in twelve games in all competitions, and they've conceded 10 goals in the past three - a far cry from the heights of last season. Speaking about the loss, Slot backed his squad and himself to find a way out of their malaise: "I don’t agree with you that the quality [of Liverpool’s players] isn’t showing itself. I see enough moments that players show their quality but it doesn’t reflect in the score or in the results, that is clear.

"But no, I am not worried – what I mean with that is that my focus is on other things than worrying about my own position. I try to analyse and try to help the players as much as I can. And it is obvious that I don’t do it in the way that I did it last season because when you talk about individual errors, I think that is also something that comes from a team effort.

"So, again, I need to do better and that is what I am trying to do every single day, to improve the team, and that is where my main focus is, to be honest."

Some fans aren't nearly as charitable about their team or their manager at the moment. Commenter Kingofthekloppynwa97 says: "Arne, do the right thing, resign. Enough is enough now, it’s not acceptable at LFC."

Reader Livfan writes: "What FSG are waiting for, that we find ourselves relegated? He has no respect towards his players, selections, the fans and the whole club, otherwise he would have had acted as a gentleman and resigned a long time ago."

Jamesie1 says: "Worst run in 71 years! The new signings in a champion side, the sad loss of Jota, and the style of Slot's football has led to this and the dressing room is lost, time to move on now."

Pangpang123 writes: "Can you imagine that how I wish we get thrashed this coming weekend so that we can finally see Slot leave for good. Slot has basically destroyed Liverpool for the worse. Like I said before, he never convinced us at all even from last season. Liverpool hasn't been playing any better during Klopp's time. It's was on the downhill since end of the last season."

NigelRG says: "Slot knows PSV inside out and should have had a game plan to deal with them. It was nowhere in evidence."

Samsongforyou says that Arne Slot has precious little time left: "Two months feels like a long time in football. The horror period under Klopp in 20/21 lasted two months, and it was awful. But we lost 5 of those 8 league games 1-0. This is different: this is rinse-and-repeat capitulation.

"I knew we would lose against Dyche's Forest on the weekend, and it's starting to feel like the players know it too. In 10 games' time, we'll be in a relegation battle with this form. I'd go as far to say that Slot has to secure seven points from the next three league games to save his job."

Topcorner20 says that the blame lies elsewhere: "The people behind Slot responsible for transfers, in and out, need replacing immediately! A title winning squad obliterated, which was not necessary to go for another title. We still have a great squad of players. Slot needs to change tactics and team management immediately to get better results."

PeKe agrees: "Arne Slot bought too many new players. Last year he could work with Jürgen's base, but now there is no base in this team."
