Marshall Faulk Southern University Head Coach

NFL Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk is set to be named as the next college football coach at Southern University in Louisiana, according to multiple reports. An official announcement is scheduled for Monday, December 1.
This decision comes just a few days after he was overruled by Deion Sanders.

Marshall Faulk is leaving Colorado for Southern.
Southern University, a 145-year-old HBCU located in Baton Rouge, fired head coach Terrence Graves at the end of October. The Jaguars are likely going to finish the 2025 regular season at 1-11. They have not won more than eight games since 2014 and only three times since.
In an effort to return to relevance, Southern is reportedly set to hire Faulk to replace Graves. The news was fired reported by Kevin Batiste of WAFB9 and has since been confirmed by multiple other outlets.
This move follows the same strategy as Jackson State, which hired Deion Sanders in 2020.
Marshall Faulk, drafted No. 2 overall in 1994, is best known for his time with St. Louis. He was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year for three-straight years from 1999-2001, the MVP in 2000, and reached seven Pro Bowls when the Pro Bowl still mattered. The Rams won Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000.
Sanders actually hired Faulk to serve as the running backs coach at Colorado this season for his first experience in a coaching role. He is now set to take over at Southern next year— assuming the deal does not fall through at the 11th hour.
Deion Sanders overruled the Jaguars’ next head coach.
Although I do not think these two things have a direct correlation, the timing is interesting. Marshall Faulk decided to leave Colorado just a few days after the head coach ignored him.
Sanders decided to put a walk-on wide receiver in the game during a crucial moment of a one-possession game and gave him the ball. Instead of riding with running backs Dallas Hayden, who averaged 6.5 yards per carry, or Micah Welch, who averaged 10.2 yards per carry, he inserted sophomore wide receiver Ronald Coleman at the position. It was his first-career carry. Ever.
Coleman actually made a nice run for 14 yards but he coughed up the ball without being touched. Arizona State recovered the fumble and scored a touchdown to seal the win on the very next play.

It was Sanders’ decision. He took full responsibility.

Faulk could not believe it. His body language and the look on his face said everything that needed to be said.

Needless to say, Southern University will not soon give the ball to a walk-on wide receiver at running back during the most crucial moment of the game. Their new head coach saw it go horribly wrong.
