Marseille 2-1 Newcastle United post match reaction
Newcastle United latest news: Could the Magpies make a major transfer U-Turn just months after beating off interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona?
Newcastle United winger Antonio Cordero could have his loan at Belgian side KVC Westerlo ended early by the Magpies in January as clubs in Spain circle for the winger.
That’s according to reports from AS in Spain who have suggested that a number of La Liga clubs have shown an interest in signing the teenager when the January transfer window opens. Cordero has made just seven appearances in all competitions for Westerlo since moving to Belgium during the summer and is yet to start for the club.
The 19-year-old has not been involved in any of Westerlo’s last three league matches and wasn’t even included in their matchday squad for their defeats against Genk and Charleroi. The lack of minutes will stagnate Cordero’s progress and could result in Newcastle United terminating his loan spell.
However, to do that, they must come to an agreement with the Belgian side during the January transfer window. If they are able to do that, then there will likely still be plenty of interest in the young Spaniard.
Antonio Cordero attracting attention from La Liga
In June, Newcastle United announced the capture of Cordero, following months of speculation surrounding his future at Malaga. Cordero was reportedly wanted by both Real Madrid and Barcelona, but it was the Magpies who were ultimately able to seal his signature.
The plan for Cordero was to send him out on-loan to a European side to help continue his development, away from the glare of the Premier League. Dutch giants Ajax were reportedly interested in him, but instead KVC Westerlo were picked as his next destination.

Having seen Yankuba Minteh shine whilst on-loan at Feyenoord during the 2023/24 season before earning a big-money move to Brighton and Hove Albion upon his return from the Netherlands, a successful loan spell for Cordero could have netted the Magpies either a tidy profit from an eventual sale, or add another exciting player to Eddie Howe’s first-team ranks. However, that has not transpired so far for the young Spaniard.
According to AS, though, a return to Spain could be what Cordero needs to reinvigorate his season. They report that ‘several clubs have already expressed interest’ in signing Cordero if his loan move in Belgium is cut short in January.
Whilst no specific clubs have been named as admirers of the winger, considering there was interest from Madrid and Barcelona in his signature just six months ago, it is likely that there will be top-flight clubs willing to take a chance on Cordero. The report goes onto state: ‘The chances of him playing in La Liga in the second half of the season are high. Several clubs missed out on signing him in the summer, and now they see that there are opportunities.’
Cordero’s future may lie away from Belgium, but he must now focus on impressing enough to force himself back into Issame Charai’s plans. Westerlo currently sit 12th in the Jupiler League table and face basement club Dender on Saturday before taking on Anderlecht on Sunday 7 December.
