Speaking to the Everton website, Southern has also praised Francis Boggan, who also plays at centre-back as well as McEveley.

“We also brought Francis Boggan on tonight, he would have started, but he’ll start on Saturday instead, we don’t want to give him too much football because he’s only 14 so we don’t want to lose him through an injury,” he said.

The Friedkins want to improve Everton’s academy recruitment after years of struggles in producing their own talents.

Not enough youngsters have made an impact over recent years, but there are already some encouraging signs coming from the youth sides.

Who is Francis Boggan?

At the age of just 14, it is simply incredible to see a player representing the U18s side and especially as a centre-back.

Everton clearly have an exciting duo coming through their ranks with the 15-year-old McEveley also playing in that position.

Harrison Armstrong has been the standout Everton academy graduate of recent years, but even he is yet to really make a splash in the first team.

Boggan has a long, long road ahead of him yet. The 14-year-old has now played twice for Everton’s U18s in the U18 Premier League this term.

And he will now be preparing for his first start on Saturday against Wolves. Keep an eye out for his name in the years to come.
