Packers rookie could start Thanksgiving duel against Lions

The Green Bay Packers are getting ready for their Thanksgiving clash with the Detroit Lions and may adjust their offensive line. Against the Minnesota Vikings last week, Jordan Morgan and Anthony Belton shared time at right guard, but Belton ended up playing all the remaining snaps.

As the Packers prepare to face the Lions, it is still uncertain who will start at right guard, but Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports that the team may have found its long-term option.

Head coach Matt LaFleur did not confirm whether Belton would start on Thursday in Detroit, but he praised the rookie’s first meaningful action since Week 3 and his first NFL game at guard after previously stepping in at tackle earlier this season.

Packers rookie already showing promise

Green Bay Packers offensive tackle Anthony Belton (71) is shown during the fourth quarter of their game Sunday, September 7, 2025 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Green Bay Packers beat the Detroit Lions 27-13.

“He came in there and he did a great job. I thought he showed the physicality and the strain that we’re looking for at that position. Obviously, he’s a big man, first time playing guard, but I thought, all in all, I thought he did a pretty good job,” said the Packers head coach.

The Packers initially had Belton focus solely on tackle during camp to avoid overwhelming him. The team values reserve linemen who can play both tackle and interior positions, and offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich noted that Belton has been practicing at guard for several weeks.

The Green Bay Packers offensive line is shown during the first quarter of their game against the Washington Commanders Thursday, September 11, 2025 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Shown are offensive tackle Anthony Belton (71), guard Sean Rhyan (75), guard Elgton Jenkins (74), offensive tackle Jordan Morgan (77) and offensive tackle Rasheed Walker (63).

“Watching him play earlier this year before he hurt his ankle, we just saw what we had there and what we liked. He obviously got injured, so it kind of set him back, but it was a move that we wanted to eventually do and give him a shot out there, and I thought he did a nice job of answering,” remarked Stenavich.

If Belton continues to impress the Packers, it would not be surprising to see him start against the Lions. He has the potential to bolster pass protection and spark the running game with Josh Jacobs back from injury.
