Packers dent Lions’ playoff hopes with Thanksgiving win

DETROIT (WILX) - The Lions’ hopes of winning a third straight NFC North title are starting to dwindle after falling to the Packers, 31-24 on Thanksgiving Day.

It was the Lions’ third loss in four games.

The Packers took a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter after a Dontayvion Wicks catch in the corner of the end zone.

After a David Montgomery touchdown trimmed the lead to 10-7, the Packers scored after a sequence that drew the ire of many Lions fans.

It appeared Green Bay had committed a false start on 4th and 1 from the 2-yard-line. But officials determined coach Matt LaFleur had called a timeout prior to the penalty.

One problem — a replay shown on the Fox broadcast appeared to show the timeout clearly being called after the penalty. The Packers went on to score on the next play, extending their lead to 17-7.

Detroit pulled within three points twice more, but was unable to get over the hump, in part due to a series of failed fourth down attempts.

This is Green Bay’s first season sweep of Detroit since 2020.

The Lions are now 7-5, still on the outside of the Wild Card slots with with just five games to play.
