Virgil van Dijk breaks silence on Liverpool defeat as pledge made to fans

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has broken his silence following the Reds' 4-1 home defeat against PSV in the Champions League on Wednesday, taking to social media to send a message to fans.

"We're facing one of the toughest moments of our journey, but we refuse to let this define us," Van Dijk wrote on Instagram. "We will rise from this. I believe in this team with everything I have. Nothing has ever been handed to us — we've fought for everything, and this moment is no different.

"We won't give in. Won't give up. Every challenge is an opportunity. We must grow together, lift each other up, and show the strength that lies within us.

"To the fans, keep supporting us. We all need each other more than ever!"

Earlier in the day, Dominik Szoboszlai — the only player to come out of the PSV game with any credit — also took to Instagram to post a message with a similar tone.

And Ibrahima Konate has also spoken, with the Liverpool players still bruised from their latest defeat.

"We have to take this moment on the chest," he wrote. "Criticism is part of football, and we'll fight back every time and come through this storm.

"In these moments, the fans matter most. The ones who stand with us in the good times and the bad — the ones who sing for us even in the difficult moments!

"Your voice and your support mean everything to us. We know we need to improve and we'll keep fighting for you. Always."

Jamie Carragher was unimpressed by Liverpool's performance, calling out the rest of the players for not helping Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah out during a poor run.

"Arne Slot has a week to save his job," he wrote in his Daily Telegraph column today. "It is hard to believe that sentence is being written.

"No matter how much goodwill the manager has, Liverpool Football Club cannot sustain the drop in standards witnessed over the past three months."

Liverpool.com says: Van Dijk was well below par against PSV. He has been unfairly criticized at times this season but his bizarre handball set the tone for what came after. Like Salah, though, he needs other people to step up and help.
