Alabama alumni collect their 28th NFL 1,000-yard rushing season

On a disappointing Thanksgiving for Detroit, Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs recorded the 28th NFL season with 1,000 rushing yards by a former Alabama ball-carrier.

In Detroit’s 31-24 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Gibbs ran for 68 yards on 20 carries. That pushed the former Crimson Tide standout’s 2025 totals to 1,019 yards on 175 rushing attempts.

Gibbs has run for 10 touchdowns this season, but the Packers kept him out of the end zone for the second time in 2025. Green Bay completed a season sweep of their NFC North rival on Thursday after opening the season with a 27-13 victory over Detroit on Sept. 7.

Gibbs already was among the eight Alabama alumni who have run for 1,000 yards in an NFL season. In 2024, Gibbs ran for 1,412 yards and 16 touchdowns on 250 carries.

The Packers had one of the Tide’s other 1,000-yard rushers in their lineup on Thursday. Josh Jacobs ran for 83 yards on 17 carries against the Lions to boost his 2025 stats to 731 yards on 186 rushing attempts.

Baltimore running back Derrick Henry is closing in on his seventh 1,000-yard season with the Ravens playing the Cincinnati Bengals at 7:20 p.m. CST Thursday. Alabama’s 2015 Heisman Trophy winner has 871 yards on 187 carries in 2025.

Alabama’s other 1,000-yard rushers in the NFL have been Bobby Humphrey, Shaun Alexander, Mark Ingram, Eddie Lacy and Najee Harris.
