The Cowboys, like the rest of the NFL universe, are well aware of the record put forth by the Chiefs in the last seven years, when they’ve gone to seven straight AFC Championship games, five Super Bowls and recorded three Super Bowl wins. As part of their dominance, the Chiefs have gained a reputation of having a brain trust that is able to stay ahead of opponents, to install some wrinkle or other that will set opponents on their heels.
The Chiefs did throw a first-down pass to little-used Jared Wiley, who had not had a catch all season. But that was a four-yard play.
For the rest of the game, Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown said that the Chiefs did nothing unusual or unexpected–which is, in turn, unusual. The Chiefs certainly did well, racking up 362 yards of offense, and four Patrick Mahomes touchdowns, but Overshown noted that their approach was pretty milquetoast.
Cowboys Were Not Surprised by Chiefs
Speaking to reporters in the Cowboys locker room after the game, Overshown said, “They did exactly what we thought they were going to do out there, attack the perimeter, try to get that going. They’ve got some very speed-and-finesse guys out there.
“Their game is to let them get in space and run. We made some adjustments, but they had a short week, too. So we knew it was not going to be too complicated in what they were going to do, they were going to do what they like to do—that’s RPOs, sling the ball to the outside and we just have to run and hit.”
DeMarvion Overshown: Cowboys Defensive Line ‘Got Pressure in His Face’
The reconfigured Cowboys defensive line was effective in pressuring Patrick Mahomes, and forced three sacks on the day–including two for veteran Jadeveon Clowney–compared to none on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
The Chiefs struggled with their pressure.
“Once our D-line starts going and you got pressure in his face, just have to do our job in the back seven and cover,” Overshown said. “We’re just taking steps to get better. It was definitely a good showing. That’s a great team, great quarterback, great weapons all around. So to come out with a dub like that, it’s a great win no matter how many points, that’s huge.”

DeMarvion Overshown Staying in the Moment
Overshown said that the Cowboys obviously know the standings–they’re 6-5-1 now–but are not all that concerned about their playoff status at this point. The team probably can’t afford to lose again, and thus, the focus is merely on winning the game in front of them.
“It’s just a win mentality,” Overshown said. “We ain’t thinking about the playoffs, it’s just win. Whoever next on the schedule, let’s beat them so we can move on to the next, because we already know, the playoffs or nothing, it ain’t going to matter if we’re not winning those games. The mentality is like, look, we are the best. We got to play like the best if we are going to do that.”
