Marseille 2-1 Newcastle United post match reaction
Newcastle United latest news: The Premier League have revealed who will referee Newcastle United’s clash with Everton on Saturday.
The Magpies returned to winning ways in the league last weekend with a 2-1 victory over Manchester City - ending a run of successive defeats before the international break. However, Eddie Howe’s side were not able to continue that momentum on Tuesday night as they were defeated by Marseille in the Champions League.
Everton, meanwhile, also secured an impressive victory in their last league outing with a 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford and have proven to be somewhat of a bogey team for Newcastle United in recent seasons.
Premier League reveal Everton v Newcastle United referee
Craig Pawson has been selected to referee Everton’s clash with Newcastle United this weekend. The Yorkshire whistler has taken charge of two Newcastle United games this season - their opening day goalless draw with Aston Villa, one he showed a red card to Ezri Konsa in, plus their 2-1 defeat against Brighton at the Amex Stadium last month.
He has refereed Everton just once this season, taking charge of their 3-0 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur last month. However, Toffees fans may not have forgotten that Pawson was the referee for this fixture last season.

The two teams battled to a goalless draw at Goodison Park, but there was still plenty of drama packed into the 90 minutes. The Magpies were awarded a penalty following a VAR review in the first-half, although Anthony Gordon saw his effort saved by Jordan Pickford.
Then, in a really controversial moment, Everton were not awarded a penalty following a coming together between Dan Burn and Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the penalty box - much to the frustration of the majority inside Goodison Park.
Speaking post-match about that decision, Sean Dyche, who left his role as Toffees manager just over three months later, revealed his frustration at not being awarded a penalty: “Everyone knows our record of not getting penalties and we haven’t got one again so we are left frustrated by that.
“He’s trying to finish it – the ball is there to be finished and he’s trying to finish it and there player interrupts the ball. Let’s put it this way – an easy way for people who want to listen – if that’s in the middle of the pitch do you think it’s given as a foul?
“Because I think everyone would say absolutely, 100 per cent but we can’t get penalties – we know that. We hope we do moving forwards.
“They didn’t have a look at it which is frustrating. You go over to the little screen, I don’t know why and everyone knows what’s going to happen – you give it for them and he did.
“It was a penalty though because you can’t do that in the box.”
This weekend, Pawson will be assisted by Lee Betts and Matt Wilkes at the Hill Dickinson Stadium with Dean Whitestone as fourth official. Darren England will be in charge of VAR at Stockley Park alongside assistant VAR Craig Taylor.
