Real Madrid have reportedly informed Liverpool FC they will not sign Ibrahima Konate as a free transfer in the January window.

The Frenchman has entered the final months of his Liverpool contract, which is set to expire in June 2026.

With no extension agreed upon despite months of negotiations, the 26-year-old will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with non-English clubs as early as January 1.

But it seems like it won’t be Real Madrid that he signs for.

David Ornstein, reporting for the Athletic, revealed:

“Although he has been considered by Real Madrid, The Athletic can reveal the La Liga side have informed their Premier League counterparts directly and unequivocally that — despite such heavy speculation — they now have no interest in recruiting the France international.”

“The 26-year old’s unresolved Liverpool FC contract situation could still go either way.”

The defender has suffered a sharp dip in form, culminating in early substitutions during Liverpool’s recent defeats to Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven.

He has come under scrutiny with many sections of the Reds fanbase not happy with some of his displays.

The Frenchman took to Instagram to thank the fans for their support and assured them that the players will keep fighting to turn Liverpool’s poor run of form around:

“We have to take this moment on the chest.”

“Criticism is part of football, and we’ll fight back every time and come through this storm.”

“In these moments, the fans matter most.”

“The ones who stand with us in the good times and the bad – the ones who sing for us even in the difficult moments!”

“Your voice and your support mean everything to us.”

“We know we need to improve and we’ll keep fighting for you. Always.”
