Liverpool manager Arne Slot is under increasing pressure after back-to-back defeats at Anfield

The Anfield outfit have lost nine of their last 12 games in all competitions and have started the post-international break fixtures with back-to-back losses at Anfield. Both of those defeats were via a three-goal margin with Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven claiming deserved victories on Merseyside.

A defeat at the London Stadium on Sunday could amplify the pressure on Slot, who currently retains the backing of the club’s owners. The Dutchman has a lot of credit in the bank after winning the Premier League title in his first season.

However, if he is unable to turn things around soon then the club may be faced with an inevitable decision.

What Arne Slot has said about his Liverpool future

Asked if he’d spoke with the club owners and sporting director Richard Hughes after the loss to PSV, Slot said: “We've had the same conversations as we've had since I'm here. Not sure if I said it last night, but we fight on. We try to improve, that's what we all try, but the conversations have been the same as they've been for the past one-and-a-half years.”

The Liverpool boss was also questioned on how he can turn the current form around. He said: “That's not so easy to say what I can do different. It's quite normal if you win or lose or draw that you reflect on a game with decisions that you've made and what you've done during the week. [They are] all kind of the usual things managers do if they win or lose. But maybe you do it a little bit more if you lose. You try to find the answers to what is needed to win a game of football.

“In the end it's about doing what this club is about. It's keep fighting no matter how difficult it is. We have to fight together. But it would also be nice if we would reward ourselves in the moments we play well, because people are very focused, and correctly, about the parts we don't play well. There are definitely large parts of the games that we do play well and where we do create a lot of chances.

“We tend to forget to reward ourselves in those moments. Every small mistake, or small error, immediately leads to us conceding a goal. That is a very bad cocktail to have.”

Luis Enrique linked with Anfield move

The Spaniard is incredibly experienced at the top level and has won 18 trophies - with all of those coming while in charge of Barcelona or PSG. He has a career win ratio of 61.4%, having managed over 500 games. He started his career with Barcelona B and then had spells with AS Roma and Celta Vigo before becoming Barcelona manager in 2015.

He won the treble with the Spanish giants in 2014-15 - in that was his first season at the club.

He would then have two spells with Spain as national team boss before joining PSG in July 2023. He won the treble with the French club last season. He is under contract until June 2027.
