Liverpool could turn to former boss Jurgen Klopp if they decide to axe Arne Slot with the German tactician now reportedly being viewed as a genuine contender for the position he once occupied.

Klopp departed Liverpool in the summer of 2024, with Slot taking the reins. The Dutch manager made an instant impact, guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut campaign, but now finds himself under intense scrutiny after a horror run of nine losses in 12 fixtures across all competitions.

It's understood that the Liverpool boss faces no immediate threat of dismissal at this stage. However, it's been claimed that should Slot eventually be sacked by the Anfield hierarchy, they might approach Klopp about returning until the end of the season.

The club would then reportedly pursue a permanent deal for their primary long-term objective, PSG manager Luis Enrique. It's suggested discussions have taken place among Liverpool executives regarding Slot's future. Officials are said to fear the manager is alienating the squad.

Following Wednesday evening's 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, Slot commented: "It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory. But if you are working as a coach and not doing well then it is normal that questions are asked.

"If you lose so many times, people start talking about that. I have got a lot of support from above. I am OK with my position.

"They don't call every single minute of the day to say they trust me, but in the normal conversations we have, I feel the trust."

Liverpool will return to action on Sunday afternoon, squaring off against West Ham United at the London Stadium in the 2.05pm kick-off. A defeat in this match could put Slot's position under serious scrutiny.

After breaking the British transfer record twice and splashing out over £420million in the summer transfer window, it's hard to reason why the Reds have suffered such a collapse.

Klopp is currently serving as the Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull. When asked about the possibility of never returning to management, Klopp gave a thought-provoking response.

"That's what I think. But you don't know," he shared with The Athletic in October.

"I'm 58. If I started again at 65, everybody will say, 'You said you'll never do it again!' Er, sorry, I thought 100% [when I said it]! That is what I think now. I don't miss anything [about being a manager]."
